Sermon Feedback

“So that…”

2 Tim 3:16-17

 Mark Howdeshell (9 September 2007)

2 Tim 3:16-17   All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Introduction

“So that…”---  I’ve intrigued a number of people this week with the title of the sermon.  It was even listed in the Faith Page of the News Miner!  “So that”…..what is he talking about?

  • It’s known as
    • Cause and effect
    • Actions and consequences
  • Examples……..
    • Safety arena
      • There are always factors that lead up to an accident
      • Remove just one of the factors and the accident probably won’t happen
    • Young mother or father teaches their children
      • Don’t touch the stove or you’ll get burnt.
      • Look both ways before you cross the street.
    • If I were to ask Danny to get up, stand on the pew, and try to jump from pew to pew…
      • He probably wouldn’t do it.  Why?
      • He’s looked at the consequences versus the rewards and it doesn’t add up.
      • He CHOOSES not to do it.

Heart of the Matter

We all face these types of decisions every day in our lives.  It is so prevalent that these cause and effect type of teachings occur 750 times in the Bible.  Look @ 2 Timothy 3: 16-17.  What is the purpose of the scripture?  “So that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

Let’s look at some of the “so that” verses in the Word.

Review of Last Message

Last week we talked about faith.  Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain in what we do not see.   Philem 6   I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ.

The Meat of the Message

As we look at the Scriptures this week, I want to look at some of the effects on different parts of our lives…then look at what it takes to achieve them.  We know the end state of where we want our lives, for the most part.  We just don’t know how to get there!

1.       Our daily walk with the Lord

·         Make your walk a private thing between you and God to receive His rewards

o   Matt 6:3-4   But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

o   Matt 6:17-18   But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

·         Be on guard against the one that wants to trick you

o   Matt 26:40-41   "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."

o   1 Cor 10:13   No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

·         Walk in humbleness towards fellow man to receive honors from God

o   Luke 14:10-11  But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, 'Friend, move up to a better place.' Then you will be honored in the presence of all your fellow guests. 11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

·         Prepare yourself to pray

o   1 Peter 4:7   The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray.

2.       Our daily lives

·         How do you react when something doesn’t go your way?

o   Phil 2:14-17   Do everything without complaining or arguing, 15 so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe 16 as you hold out the word of life — in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing.

·         Do you suffer trials and heartaches?

o   1 Peter 1:6-7   In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that your faith — of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire — may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

o   James 1:4-5   Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

o   1 Peter 4:12-13   12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.

·         Do you serve with gladness of heart to the best of your ability?

o   1 Peter 4:11   If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

3.       Our interaction with others

·         How do you treat your spouse?

o   1 Peter 3:1   Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that , if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives

o   1 Peter 3:7   Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.

o   1 Peter 3:8-9   Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. 9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.

·         Have you forgiven those that may have wronged you?

o   Mark 11:25  And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins."

·         Do you make an investment in others or just take care of yourself?

o   Matt 25:27   Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.

4.       The eternal significance

·         “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”

o   John 9:35-39   Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"  36 "Who is he, sir?" the man asked. "Tell me so that I may believe in him." 37 Jesus said, "You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you."  38 Then the man said, "Lord, I believe," and he worshiped him.  39 Jesus said, "For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind."

·         What is the source of your hope?

o   Rom 15:13   May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

·         How do we receive the Spirit…the source of hope?

o   Gal 3:14  He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

·         How are we redeemed?

o   2 Cor 5:21  God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

·         Are you ready for Him to come again?

o   1 John 2:28  And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.

The Bottom Line

John 16:1--- “All this I have told you SO THAT you will not go astray.”  The Words of the Lord give us specific instructions in regards to all of our walks of life.  When you read a “so that” in your daily time with Him, take note of the effect of that action.  Through this practice, maybe you will not go astray.
